Blue house during fall

Fall is officially in full swing in Kansas City! That means all things pumpkin spice, hoodies, leaves changing colors—and it means your home needs to get ready for colder weather!

We’ve got the essential things to check off your to-do list this month!

Check For Peeling Paint

Inspect the outside of your home for any peeling or blistering paint. You’ll want to correct that right away. Leaving wood exposed will lead to deterioration—and to very expensive repairs in the future.

Check Your Gutters

It isn’t fall without falling leaves, so it’s time to have your gutters and downspouts flushed. A professional gutter cleaner will check joints and tighten brackets, if needed. Clogged gutters lead to ice dams in the winter. If it’s time to replace, go with gutters that have built-in leaf guards.

Check Your Driveway

Inspect your driveway for cracks. If you see anything problematic, you’ll want to hire a pro to clean out and repair any damage and then seal your driveway. Sealer will extend the life of your driveway through the winter and well after.

Check Your Ceiling Fans

Which direction are your ceiling fans spinning? You want to create an upward draft that redistributes warm air from the ceiling. To reverse the direction of your ceiling fan, first switch the fan off (otherwise you’ll be headed to one of our great local emergency rooms). Look for the small toggle switch on the side of the motor casing, and switch its position. When you turn the fan back on, it’ll rotate the other way. You want your fan to rotate clockwise in the winter and counterclockwise in the summer.

Check Your Garage

We’re going to run out of nice days where you actually want to be outside. Now is the time to do a thorough garage cleanout. Dispose of toxic materials like paint and cleaners. Donate gently-used equipment you no longer need. Go for a full garage organizing system so that this winter you can actually park both cars in the garage! (It’s totally possible; we promise!)
